A service dog, with training started as a puppy, generally takes until the age of 14-20 months old to be a completely trained service dog. In many cases, it may take puppy to the age of 24 months, based on the individual circumstances of the puppy and owner, the tasks required, and the type of training program the puppy/owner team is enrolled in. Most nationally recognized service dog programs will not begin the training until a dog is at least 6 months old.
FIGZ recommends any program that is either a Train-Your-Own Service Dog program or an in-home training service to maximize the potential of the puppy. Kennel-type training programs are not recommended by FIGZ due to the personal bonding needs that poodles display, and the difficulties dogs have transitioning into a home after being accustomed to kennel life.
Puppies from other breeders must be evaluated before entering a program. All Candidates will need and application sent to and a conference call with Scouts Legacy and FIGZ before entering a program.
Train-your-own (with a FIGZ puppy) - We are currently accepting enrollment FIGZ has partnered with Scout’s Legacy to provide this program, which includes FIGZ hands on training in addition to Scout’s Legacy advanced obedience, command and task training need to pair the command with the medical event, and all training needed to pass the Public Access Test.
Puppy/Dog will live at home with their owner. Puppy/Dog will be enrolled in individual and group classes as Puppy/Dog is trained for basic obedience, house, public and potty manners, and any task training needed, using appropriate reinforcement, while being exposed to different sights, sounds, distractions, vehicles, locations and environments that Puppy would be exposed to during their career as a service dog. Owner understands and agrees to have several training sessions a day and multiple field trips a week with Puppy to help generalize the commands and tasks.
FIGZ allows Puppy to start the program as early as 8 weeks of age, but Owner understands Puppy will need 12 months or more of training to be able to pass evaluation. Upon completion of the Train-your-own Service Dog program, Puppy will receive a letter of certification of training completion and patch for Puppy’s service vest. Puppy will need to reevaluate each year thereafter.
The cost for the train-your-own service dog is determined by Scout's Legacy and paid directly to them. It is approximately $5000 plus $300 per month until Puppy has completed all Lessons. Price does not include purchase price of Puppy.
Board & Train Service Dog - We are currently on a 4-6 month wait list FIGZ has partnered with Scout’s Legacy to provide this program, which includes Puppy spending split amount of time going back and forth between Owner and FIGZ. Started Service Dog - We are currently on a 6 month wait list FIGZ has partnered with Scout’s Legacy to provide this program, which includes Scout’s Legacy course of advanced obedience, command and task training need to pair commands with a medical event, and all training needed to pass the Public Access Test. In addition with hands-on training by FIGZ.
Owner will give FIGZ a list of tasks needed to aide Owner with their disability. A few examples are: deep pressure therapy (your dog using their weight to alleviate a panic attack), medical alert (your dog nudging your hand, face, body, etc. to get your attention) and medication and/or drink retrieval. FIGZ agrees to train Puppy for the agreed set of Disability Aided Commands, including people and animal socialization, public access, and basic obedience.
As a Started Service Dog, Owner is aware that the tasks and aforementioned training is in the beginning phases and Puppy will not be a fully trained service dog. Owner understands and agrees that continued training is necessary for the Started Service Dog to have a solid understanding of the concepts taught, before being at the level of a fully trained Service Dog. FIGZ agrees to email weekly updates on training. Owner will notify FIGZ as soon as possible if they wish to change commands or tasks.
Puppy will stay with FIGZ until at least 4-6 months, which is when Puppy can test for entrance into a nationally recognized service dog program. Puppy will be enrolled in a vigorous in-home training program (no kennel/boarding type environment) and be exposed to the sights, sounds, distractions and environments they would be exposed to during their career as a service dog. House training, basic obedience, and task training begin immediately using positive reinforcement. Puppy will have several training sessions a day and multiple field trips a week to help generalize the commands and tasks. We provide weekly video updates so you can not only follow the progress of Puppy and answer any questions or make modifications to tasks for you as needed. To demonstrate Puppy has the skills required for public access, Puppy will be receive its certification through the AKC accredited Canine Good Citizen program.
While in the first 6 months of training, these tasks will be command based only since Puppy will need to work with Owner and trainer in actual event situations to pair those commands with the individual cues or scents of Owner. Saliva samples taken during an episode can aide in the pairing.
Upon completion of the Started program, FIGZ will deliver Puppy and Owner will receive in home, hands-on training to start the pairing possess. Keep in mind that a 6-8 month old dog is still very much a puppy so will need continued training so they would have a solid understanding of what is asked of them. It is imperative to work with them daily and continue to get them out multiple times a week so that Owner and Puppy grow as a team.
